A Prediction Market Participant Earned $Nearly Half a Million on Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.

An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, made more than $436K from a initial bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other individuals also earned large payouts from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A bill put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with users able to wager on everything from sports to political events.

The industry faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
