Among Avatar's most charming MTG cards proves to be a formidable compact force.

the popular card game’s collaboration with Avatar will not become widely available in the coming days, but after early access events this past weekend, a low-cost green spell has already exploded in value.

Throughout the spoiler season, Badgermole Cub garnered widespread focus. This two-power, two-toughness requiring G and 1 mana, the card features level 1 earthbending (arguably the most effective within the set’s four “bending” mechanics). The major perk with this card comes from its second ability: Each time a creature is tapped to produce mana, it provides bonus green mana.

Initially, this card sold at around $27. After the pre-release weekend, however, the going rate escalated above $45 including listings as high as $60. What explains Vivi prices on this adorable card? Mostly due to the rapid resource generation it provides.

As it hits the board, Badgermole Cub turns a terrain card so it becomes a creature granting it earthbend. Combined with its other power, if it remains on the board, those lands produces twice the mana — plus mana-producing creatures in your control which tap for mana.

An ideal partner for synergy includes Llanowar Elves, a low-cost creature that taps to generate a green resource. However many creatures that make mana out there. Another option is a higher-cost choice a 1/3 creature costing two mana instead.

Using land cards, mana-producing creatures, alongside this card, it's simple to summon an enormous high-cost creature into play early in the game. And things just keep spiraling out of control by maintaining dominance after that.

By incorporating an additional hue using this method, cards like versatile mana producers are all great options that can make any mana color. And something like Dryad of the Ilysian Grove lets you play one extra land each turn AND makes every land you control into every basic land type. You can also consider for example this six-mana enchantment, which for six mana provides each permanent you control the power to produce one mana of any color — including each creature in play.

Badgermole Cub could be too strong when it comes to boosting mana production, but what closes out the game in such a strategy? An often-seen solution already is this legendary creature. Power and toughness match your land count, and it makes all of your nontoken creatures into Forests along with their original types. In other words, every single creature in play is able to produce double green by tapping.

Another creature is another expensive, beefy creature which gains from many terrain cards (similar to Ashaya, its power and toughness are equal to how many lands you have).

This Planeswalker is an excellent fit as a staple. Her static effect causes every Forest produce extra green. (Combined with earthbend, that means each one yield three G.) Her plus ability functions like a proto-earthbend, adding counters on a land, a useful effect but it isn't redundant with the cub's ability. Her ultimate, however, renders each land you control unbreakable and allows you to search for every Forest left in your deck. Should you manage to use this power, this typically means the game ends.

The cub is pretty much essential in any green-based Avatar strategies that use earthbend. When branching into red and green, you can use Bumi. He has earthbend 4, plus if it hits a player to an opponent, all land creatures untap and can attack again. Even though Bumi is a popular Commander choice, the cub is definitely going to remain one of, if not the most desired card in the Avatar set.
