Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is leaving the board at OpenAI, just a week after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.
He stated in an announcement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the enterprise, and look forward following their advancement".
The prominent academic, who formerly presided over Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
The recently released emails revealed that Summers corresponded with the financier until the eve of his 2019 arrest for accused sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the technology organization said it accepted Summers' choice to resign.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the perspective he offered to the directors," the organization remarked.
This development arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch voted on Tuesday to pass a bill that would require the US justice department to make public its documents on the case.
The measure will then proceed to the office of the White House for approval. The President has indicated he expects to endorse the bill, after reversing his position on the subject following objections from his base.
A group of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the legislative panel recently referenced multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without indicating any criminal activity by those individuals.
The messages indicated that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often attempting to link the official to notable international personalities.
After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, Summers expressed he accepted "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to continue interacting with the financier".
He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and repair relationships with the individuals closest to me".
The professor held senior posts under Democratic administrations; functioning as Treasury chief under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He headed Harvard from five years and is still a professor there. When declaring his departure from public duties recently on this week, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Following his announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, confirmed that Summers was not affiliated with the institution.
Summers joined the leadership of OpenAI, which makes ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive the company leader.
