Three police officers perished and more than a dozen people were hurt in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.
The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property close to the city of Verona to carry out an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.
One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and a third person who fled following the explosion was apprehended soon after. All three have been admitted to medical facility.
The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene revealed the property reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.
The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was under an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.
Mediators had been dispatched to engage the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member triggered the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno informed the media.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.
Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the interior minister stated.
The wounded by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.
According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had was without power.
The official was convinced the explosion had occurred on a story above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he said members had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told reporters, noting that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
