Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Earn Initial Victories Following Player Arrests

NBA game action

The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half points versus the Grizzlies

The Heat claimed a overwhelming 146 to 114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA match after player Rozier was arrested for alleged illegal sports betting.

Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping federal probe into sports betting. Both men deny the allegations.

However, the Heat were not distracted as they put up 86 first-half scores to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the team's 37 year existence.

Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and afterwards said Terry had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through the situation."

The Trail Blazers also won their initial match since the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and leading the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 win over the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."

League Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Arrests

Addressing the detentions for the first time, league head Adam Silver stated he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

Silver further said an league probe into the player's actions in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.

"We investigated the matter and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the NBA is unable to.

"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.

"And two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
