The English golfer Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off following a rollercoaster final round of competition.

Rai nailed a decisive birdie from around eight foot to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory against the same opponent.

Final Round Excitement

The champion entered the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

The challenger edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.

Play-Off Decider

This led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to take the championship and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more person. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”

Other Contenders

The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdies of his as well, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
