Thomas Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Aggression Provided England's Star Leaves His Ego at the Door.

A single omission did the trick. A second one and it might have appeared vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is much too clever not to know that winning the World Cup is probably going to require contributions by the talented midfielder, even if it is equally on the midfielder to fit into the tactical structures and team pecking order necessary with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.

The manager wants his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is about channeling it in the right way. Skill counts but England know from bitter experience that there is consequences when fame prevails. Still, a statement has been delivered.

The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after being left out of last month’s squad. He watched England qualify at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers excel as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as Tuchel discuss valuing the group’s energy and ethics. Naturally, Bellingham has responded in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid against their rivals and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have put his tournament chances precarious.

The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham directed towards pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period out of the team has made him realize that representing the national team is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the youngster after showing that he is willing to drop big names.

“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” the German stated. “Jude just has that aggression. You need that kind of fire to succeed at the top that he reached. Everyone need to support him and create a atmosphere where he can channel his drive towards opponents and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”

Bellingham dominated most of the attention at the team news conference for the upcoming meaningless matches against one opponent and the other. Any other news? Well, what about Phil Foden? Here is a further gifted playmaker who needs support and direction. He has been absent for England since March and has struggled to hit the heights this year but the boss had to consider the player after his performance in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund this week.

The issue, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to pick Cole Palmer once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager never found the optimal mix at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, restricting the captain's style in the process.

It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it harms the attacking balance. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles helps. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who must play through the middle. The coach prefers him close to Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “Phil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I've long had this vision about him for years. In my view it suits him best.”

He agreed there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then clearly something is not right, whether it's his role, the setup, it's unclear.

“I think he is also so used to playing for his club in a certain structure, with a defined role. Believe he benefits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

The manager mentioned Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and Foden drilling in goals from outside the box. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Several players, others, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for City at defense. Interest is high.

The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should he be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for trying new things.

At the same time, it is also a chance to foster Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting Kane to score in an international match against the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. The coach will know that the two stars only passed to each other once during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.

“At this point eventually it becomes the responsibility of the players,” he stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a sense of Bellingham under scrutiny. He may not be assured to start against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Leave the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an superior one.
