World Health Organization Raises Warning Over Severe Shortage of Obesity Injections

Under a tenth of patients who could benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy have access to them, states the WHO as it issues its first recommendations on the therapies.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide currently living with obesity, it is advocating for increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

According to projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidelines affirms that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be managed with thorough and ongoing care," said its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are major barriers to broad availability to the treatments that can help people shift significant body mass, notes the agency.

Skinny Jab Shortage

Despite the present most favorable case, the production of such drugs could only cover around 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, per the WHO.

The advice urges countries and companies to expand access, via measures such as licensing agreements.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the main ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in a number of countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Injections Function

GLP-1 drugs replicate a biological compound to slow digestion, reduce hunger and enhance feelings of fullness so individuals eat less.

Patients typically start to lose weight in the initial weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Studies suggests patients may see weight return after a year of discontinuing the medication, as their typical hunger resume.

Being carrying excess weight elevates your chance for experiencing medical conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some cancers.

Obesity impacts individuals in countries worldwide and was associated with 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
